Mr Spong Timeline
1990
Esponjoso, now proudly known as Mr. Spong in the U.S., is a family-owned business founded in 1990 by third-generation family bakers with a deep commitment to quality and excellence. From the very beginning, our mission was clear: create a cake with real ingredients, low sugar, with an unforgettable taste. Drawing inspiration from rich flavors of our native country, the Dominican Republic and using the base of a light, fluffy traditional sponge cake, our founder, Jesus Santos, perfected the formula for this unique creation.
2008
In 2008, Esponjoso officially launched its products in the Dominican Republic, quickly earning a reputation for incredible taste and quality. Esponjoso was an immediate success and quickly became the largest bakery in the Caribbean, our flagship products, such as the “Junior Cake” and “Square Cake,” became beloved across the region. By 2010, we expanded our reach to the United States.
2011
In 2011, we took a bold step and rebranded as Mr. Spong in the U.S. We left behind our roots in the Dominican Republic to embrace the advanced business resources of America, aiming to bring our delicious cakes to the masses while still prioritizing the freshness and quality that made us a household name back home.
2015
2015 we introduced our flagship product, a sponge cake filled with real fruit flavors like guava, pineapple, and strawberry. This move made Mr. Spong the first company in the U.S. to offer such a product, helping us carve out a unique space in the market.
2025
Today, Mr. Spong products are available in over 8,000 retailers across the United States, and our growth continues to remain consistent year to year. We are proud to share our delicious cakes, made with love and care, to a diverse cultural customer base across the country. We are honored to contribute to the rich diversity of Latin American food culture with products made in the USA and continue our journey of excellence.
